#73 - Hair Edit - The Dyson Review You Probably Didn't Want to Read
Dyson Supersonic (TM) Hairdryer. The luxury of hairdryers that costs a whopping £299.99 (pretty much £300) with zero discounts, sales, everyone hypes about it, everyone who got one is in love with it.
So I bought one from Boots around Christmas/New Years period, with a voucher that I had. If I didn’t have the voucher it’s highly, highly, unlikely that I would have bought it.
Well, I do love this hairdryer, but partially because £300 was spent on it, but mostly because the experience of using this is just so much better from the £20 hairdryer I upgraded from.
Without a doubt, when you spend this kind of money, you are buying technology, truly, and the experience. You don’t see a hairdryer like this on the market, nor does Dyson release a huge variety of the same product. They have 1 hairdryer, 1 hair curler which also doubles up as a hair dryer, probably, and 1 hair straightener.
So before I get into some mild bitching because, balanced review, here IS what you’re paying for:
unique “bladeless” Dyson technology, much like their vacuum cleaners (which are, truly great products)
very strong and consistent wind: allows you to dry your hair faster, and at a lower temperature, lessen risk of heat damage on hair
magnetic attachments: change attachments easily as held together by magnet; just snap on, can twist
size: if you travel a lot or have limited space, this is much more compact than a salon-grade hairdryer (which this would be equivalent to); the weight is also distributed to the handle so you can hold on to this better
It looks pretty
overall much better hairdrying experience
Now that that’s out of the way, here are my problems with this hairdryer (but I still love it, just to make it clear)
Accessories
If I’m spending £300 on a product, I would really want it to come in its own bag, Dyson branded. Not only it doesn’t come in one or with one, if you want one with a stand you pay another £20 extra for it; the stand only comes with the product if it’s a holiday collection which I’ve missed when I was buying this.
You get a massive box for it though, if you ever want to keep it.
Not only that, as I’m writing this I’ve discovered that the box I bought from Boots has 1 less attachment than if you buy it from the Dyson website.
For the same, bloody, price.
It comes with a cooling mat, which if I’m frank, I have never used because I keep it in my bag after I’ve dried my hair straight after my shower. When I travelled I have popped it on a surface so that’s good for vanity if you have one, otherwise I put my electronics back into a shelf/bag when I’m done with it…because I have no vanity.
Or space.
Performance
I don’t have that many problems with the performance, so this is really based on experience and what you’re upgrading from. I upgraded from a £20 hairdryer - you get what you pay for. Babyliss was fine, it did its job and objectively, I’ve timed both products on how long it takes for each of them to dry my hair from a similar “wet” state to preferred “dry” state both at highest heat and wind setting. Dyson did 30 seconds better, BUT because my socket in the extension lead kept short circuiting when I put it on max, I did have to lower the temperature 1 step down. Objectively, the Dyson would do better in terms of speed but how fast do you actually need your hair to dry?
The speed also depends on how thick, how long, and your drying techniques as well, which is why I say it depends what you’re upgrading from. This is absolutely fabulous if you’re upgrading from a £20 hairdryer like me, but if you’re already using a salon-grade hairdryer because you’re fabulous, then my speculation is that this won’t be groundbreaking enough for you to spend £300 on.
And here’s the thing. If you want a better performing hairdryer, you do not need to actually buy this - a salon grade hair dryer will get you there especially if you’ll be using it at home majority of the time. The downside is that a lot of these would be pretty big compared to the Dyson Supersonic
So yes, it’s good but it’s not so good that you absolutely need to spend £300 on a hairdryer.
TL;DR - not enough accessories for £300 and it’s good, but it ain’t ground-breaking good.
So….what then?
As opposed to conclusion.
here’s the thing right - this hairdryer is 200% a luxury product. You don’t need this not matter how much you think you do. I waited an entire year for this and used a gifted voucher to get this for less. This is not an impulse buy but it is also not a regrettable buy.
Before I started writing this review I was 2 minds about it, mainly because of lack of accessories. And then I used my old hairdryer again to test the speed and the difference experience in using both was vast. I didn’t think my £20 Babyliss was shite, but as soon as I turned the Dyson on again the experience of using it is far superior.
My favourite thing about the Dyson is the consistency in the strength of the wind. It’s something that a lot of my cheap hairdryers (naturally) fall short - maybe it’s just my electricity that causes a drop in the wind strength, but there is absolutely no way my old hairdryer will have the same strength and speed that the Dyson has. It’s just not made for that.
If you have the means to get this and want something compact and easy to store yet still delivers stellar results and experience, then go for it. Remember you’re not just buying it for the performance. It’s the technology that makes the performance, and very much the branding that makes you feel special (I do…).
If you do get it, try to see if you can find the gift sets or look at this with different retailers to see what they come with and what they have available.
And that concludes a probably unhelpful review of this hairdryer that may not have helped with your decision.
I thought the title was clickbait but maybe it’s not afterall…
