#22 - Makeup Edit - Nailing the Everyday look

I don't know about you, but I'm all about getting that extra 5-10 minutes in bed before getting up for work. It took me a while to really know how to do an everyday/office look and nail it so I can get it completed in ~10 minutes and ready to change and get out the door. I watched tutorials but not realising there is one important factor that contributes the most to an everyday look - habit.

I filmed a real time video on how I do my makeup, but the truth is that without habit, it's hard to really nail that everyday look (and modify it to produce different looks) in a short period of time. At least for me - you may be a lot better at makeup than I am. First you have to have a routine, then you build habit and really get to know each step of the way that suits your own face. That's the thing about tutorial - all these steps these people were doing weren't working because my facial structure and features and skin are different.

Here's the second key to nailing this look - knowing yourself.

You need to know what works and what doesn't on your face, and what products work best for your face.

I know my routine straight away; it's almost a muscle memory for me straight form cleansing and toning, to completing the look. Some steps like cleansing, toning and moisturising are pretty straight forward, but here are the steps that took me a while to really know what worked for me:

Eyeshadow

There are so many youtubers and makeup artists who are great with eyeshadows and blending and all that. Not me, really, I still have so much to learn and so many eye shapes that I need to practice on to get good at it. In fact, blending is still a challenge. But I know what definitely works for me - a wash of light/shimmer shadow, then apply darker colour on the outer 3rd of the eye and blend inwards.

This will create a really simple smoky eye that isn't OTT and you can opt for lighter/subtle colours to make it more suitable for the day, or intensify it at the end of the day to make it a night time look. Honestly this depends on how well you know your eyes and it takes a lot of experimenting for you to know what really works. So try, always try, always practice, and I promise you will figure it out.

Eyeliner

I am going to come clean and tell you that it actually took me months to learn how to do my eyeliner suitable to my eye. Look, some eyes you just can't do a wingliner like every other youtuber out there. I do my right eye differently from how I do my left eye and that's absolutely okay because as long as the result is what you're after, then it works.

Lipstick

I am not a person who can do precise lip looks without taking 30 minutes. I know this, so I will always opt for products that I can get away with it - the Asian ombre lip look, lip tints, tinted lip balms... thing that don't require that much effort are the ones I will opt for

Every step of the routine I figure out the most efficient way to do it. Some to do with techniques, some with products and it's down to what you're happy with. There is no right way of doing an "everyday" look, but if you have a look you want to nail and complete in 10 minutes, ready to walk out the door with, the keys are habit and knowing yourself.

Here's the video:
